The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal (Army Award) to Captain Michael Zabel, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious service to the United States as Distribution Chief, Deputy Chief of Staff, Resources and Sustainment, Multi-National Force-Iraq, Baghdad, Iraq, from 11 September 2006 to 20 June 2007 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Captain Zabel’s superb leadership and extensive knowledge of theater logistics contributed significantly to the readiness and sustainment for Multi-National Force-Iraq. He was the founder of Task Force TRUCH which succeeded in removing 100 convoy protection platforms and 300 soldiers from direct exposure to direct and indirect fire and improvised explosive devices. Often at personal risk, he has repeatedly been exposed to direct threat by the enemy in the performance of his mission. Captain Zabel’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, Multi-National Force-Iraq, and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Michael Zabel, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Assistant Director for Audit and Follow-up for Navy Reserve, Naval Inspector General Detachment 106, from December 2007 to August 2009. Captain Zabel’s outstanding leadership resulted in planning, obtaining funding for, and supporting the re-start of the Iraqi railway running from Baghdad to Doura. This resulted in removing 8 percent of the monthly sustainment trucks from the Iraqi roads, significantly reducing 300 soldiers’ exposure to improvised explosive devices. Additionally, he improved the quality of life for numerous Navy families by mentoring Individual Augmentee personnel and helping to resolve pay problems during deployment. As an expeditionary combat logistics riverine warfare expert for the United States Army, Navy and Coalition partners, he determined shortfalls in combat readiness and recommended courses of action. His initiated the proper outfitting of personnel for combat operations. Finally, he supported numerous Naval Inspector General Area Visits contributing to the improvement of Navy wide logistics issues. His superlative achievements have culminated in a distinguished career of 26 years of faithful service to his country. By his dynamic leadership, keen judgment, and loyal devotion to duty, Captain Zabel reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
