The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert Byron See (MCSN: 0-20333), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Marine Fighting Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-321), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Bismarck Archipelago Area on 20 January 1944. While leading his division as bomber escort on a daring strike against Rabaul, First Lieutenant See succeeded in destroying two of the many enemy fighters which attempted to intercept the formation and, although his own plane was seriously crippled in the action, skillfully piloted the aircraft back to base. By his expert airmanship, courage and loyal devotion to duty in the face of heavy opposition, he contributed materially to the success of his squadron and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
