The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Michael Allen Andrews (ASN: OF-111413), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Andrews distinguished himself by heroic actions on 19 September 1968, while serving as Platoon Leader with Company C, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on combat operations, Company C’s element was ambushed. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Andrews placed devastating fire on the enemy, while exposed to hostile fire. On several occasions, First Lieutenant Andrews deliberately placed himself in a vulnerable position so as to draw fire, and allow his men to withdraw. He moved to the flanks of the company, and as he used smoke to mark his position, First Lieutenant Andrews directed gunship fire. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the insurgents. First Lieutenant Andrews’ personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
