The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Christopher James Needels (ASN: OF-104930), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action on 25 August 1966. On this date, Second Lieutenant Needels’ company conducted an assault on a well-fortified Viet Cong base camp under intense machine gun, small arms, and grenade fire. Second Lieutenant Needels, a Weapons Platoon Leader, was unable to locate the company commander during the initial stages of the battle and therefore assumed command of the remaining personnel of the company. Without regard for his personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to the devastating hostile fire in order to reorganize his elements and place his men in defensive positions. Throughout the remainder of the night, Second Lieutenant Needels continuously checked his positions, encouraging his weary troops, and keeping them on the alert for a possible insurgent counterattack. Second Lieutenant Needels’ rapid adjustment to a critical situation and his courageous leadership were an inspiration to his men and enabled the company to achieve a decisive victory over a determined Viet Cong force. Second Lieutenant Needels’ unquestionable valor in close combat against superior hostile forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
