The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) George Dennis Lenhart (ASN: 0-93803), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Lenhart distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 27 – 28 October 1967, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. After completing an air assault, Major Lenhart led his company against an enemy bunker complex, continuously exposing himself to heavy hostile fire in order to direct and control the unit. As they advanced, clearing each bunker, he skillfully deployed his men to insure that all the hostiles were routed and that none could maneuver to the rear of his advancing troops. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Major Lenhart moved throughout the area, ordering the attack and encouraging his men until the sweep was completed late that night. Major Lenhart’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
