First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Harry Clay Hale, United States Army, 12th Infantry Regiment, was cited for conspicuous courage, fortitude, good judgment, and tact from 6 to 24 December 1890, in dealing with the hostile Sioux Indians at their ghost-dance camp near the mouth of Cherry Creek, South Dakota, which resulted in the surrender and disarmament of a large band of them.
