The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David C. Graham (ASN: 0-5351034), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Graham distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 6 December 1968 while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company B, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Long An Province. After his company became locked in a fierce exchange of fire with a well-entrenched enemy force, Lieutenant Graham courageously crawled forward through the heavily mined area raked by enemy rounds to within a few feet of an enemy bunker, then stood up and threw a grenade into the emplacement. Due to the heavy fortification, the Viet Cong inside were only stunned and so Lieutenant Graham engaged them with his personal weapon, completely silencing their fire. As his unit moved deeper into the enemy stronghold, their advance was once again halted by an effectively positioned fortification and Lieutenant Graham moved forward through the fusillade a second time and destroyed the emplacement with hand grenades. Second Lieutenant Graham’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
