The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Gunner’s Mate (SEAL) ***** *****, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Fire Team Leader and Lead Communicator for a Joint Task Force conducting special operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 25 June 2003. During this period, Chief Petty Officer *****’s convoy was ambushed while returning from a mission. He immediately returned fire despite the deaths and injuries of his teammates and engaged the enemy on a ridgeline above him while dismounting his disabled vehicle. With no regard for his own personal safety, he moved directly into the enemy line of fire to obtain an advantageous flanking position. Chief Petty Officer ***** quickly identified the enemy’s position and maneuvered his remaining forces into a superior fighting position. He calmly and precisely directed suppressive fire on the enemy, consolidated his position with wounded personnel, and enabled his damaged convoy to stop the enemy attack. After moving his teammates and casualties to a secure area, Chief Petty Officer ***** initiated a medical evacuation and personally attended to two wounded teammates. His brave action undoubtedly saved additional lives and prevented further casualties in his convoy. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Chief Petty Officer ***** reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
