Joseph Steele served for more than a year in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve before being appointed a Cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, where he graduated with the Class of 1944. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1976.
