Thomas Matteson graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, Class of 1957. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1993. He subsequently served from 1993 to 1998 as Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
