Wilfred Derby was commissioned in the Coast Guard through the School of Instruction of the Revenue Cutter Service, precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in 1911. He served as Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1947 until his retirement as a U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral in 1950.
