Ellsworth Bertholf graduated from the School of Instruction of the Revenue Cutter Service, precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in 1887. He was the first member of the Coast Guard to achieve Flag Rank. From 1911 to 1919 he was the Fourth Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, and retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Commodore in 1919.
