James Alger entered the Coast Guard as an Ensign after graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He served in the Coast Guard from 1931 until 1967, rising from ensign to a rear admiral who commanded men and ships along much of the northeast Atlantic Coast. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1967.
