Newell, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Communications Officer on the Staff of a Task Group Commander in the Western Pacific area from 29 August 1944 to 25 January 1945.
