Nicholson, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer Mine Force, FIFTH Fleet, in the East China Sea and Tsugaru Straits, from 5 July 1945 to 20 October 1945.
