Grooms, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Fighter Pilot in Fighting Squadron SEVEN (VF-7), embarked in U.S.S. HANCOCK (CV-12), in the Philippine Islands area on 26 October 1944.
