Schaffer, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in Bombing Squadron TEN (VB-10), embarked in U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6), over the Mariana Islands on 20 June 1944.
