Thom, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct as Executive Officer of a Motor Torpedo (PT) Boat when his vessel was sunk while attacking a Japanese destroyer in the Solomon Islands on the night of 1 and 2 August 1943.
