(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] John F. Byrum, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy as Radar Officer of the U.S.S. SANDLANCE (SS-381), during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine in enemy controlled waters from 20 April 1944 to 3 June 1944. He rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting aggressive attacks against the enemy to sink over 22,000 tons of enemy shipping and to damage over 6,000 tons. His leadership, courage and devotion to the completion of each perilous mission reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Byrum and the United States Naval Service.
