Herr, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot and Division Leader in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-FOUR (VF-24), embarked in U.S.S. BELLEAU WOOD (CVL-24), during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea on 19 June 1944.
