Chapin, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Staff to a Commander of Amphibious Group ONE, in the assault on Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Ulithi, from 27 February 1944 to 9 July 1945.
