Shaw, United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a carrier-based dive bomber in Bombing Squadron SIX (VB-6), over the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and Truk, 19 November 1943 to 16 February 1944.
