Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 336 (March 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign [then Chief Machinist’s Mate] Peter J. Sasgen, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during a war patrol in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. As a member of the ship’s company during patrol in enemy-controlled waters, Ensign Sasgen’s leadership, sound professional knowledge and devotion to duty were major factors in the efficient operation of machinery during that patrol. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
