The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Charles J. Hawkins, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of a Tank Landing Ship (LST) during operations in Vella Lavella on 1 October 1943. Lieutenant Hawkins fearlessly directed fire against 30 hostile planes attacking his ship. Despite damage to his vessel he continued to unload vitally needed cargo of gasoline and ammunition, completing this task in excellent time. Five of the Japanese aircraft were destroyed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
