The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class John L. Farris, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as a member of the 1st Beach Battalion during landing operations south of Salerno, 15 September 1943. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Farris voluntarily assisted British forces in relieving the congestion of vehicles which were stalled because of inadequate exits, although the area was constantly subjected to a devastating barrage. When an Army bulldozer arrived, Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Farris steadfastly remained to assist in fastening tow-cables although many of the machines received direct hits while leaving the landing craft. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
