The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign John J. Vogel, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while in charge of a salvage party from the U.S.S. LYON (AP-71) during the invasion of Italy in 1944. Ensign Vogel coolly and efficiently directed his men in clearing the assault beaches of numerous broached and damaged landing craft in order to expedite the steady flow of essential Army supplies. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
