The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class John F. O’Brien, United States Navy, for heroic conduct when he saw a small child carried into the water by a runaway jeep on the nigh of 29 May 1944. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class O’Brien jumped into the swiftly running sea and grabbed the child, swam about 40 feet to the pier and carried the child to safety.
