The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant John G. Piegari, United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct when the U.S.S. LISCOME BAY (CVE-56) was torpedoed and sunk on 24 November 1943. Lieutenant Piegari and another officer assisted a fellow officer who was still weak from an appendectomy performed seven days before and who would have lost his life without their assistance.
