Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 330 (September 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade David C. Pinholster, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander of a Patrol Plane in the Atlantic during World War II. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Pinholster attacked a surfaced U-boat in the face of anti-aircraft fire and pressed home a vigorous attack with depth bombs, which exploded close aboard the target. He continued to strafe the submarine until lack of ammunition and heavy casualties to the crew forced him to break off the engagement.
