The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Coxswain Donald H. Butler, United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct when his vessel suffered a damaging underwater explosion in the Aleutian Islands area during World War II. Coxswain Butler voluntarily jumped into the cold and oil-covered sea to rescue comrades blown overboard by the explosion.
