The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Jerry Johnson, United States Navy, for heroic conduct as a member of a fire and rescue party engaged in operations at Salerno Bay, 12 September 1943. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Johnson boarded the blazing vessel despite imminent danger from exploding gasoline, land mines and chlorine gas, and assisted in the perilous task of controlling the flames.
