The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Pierce Richard Moore (NSN: 6001331), United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as a member of a salvage-boat crew during the invasion of Salerno in September 1943. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Moore worked with outstanding courage in the face of intense enemy fire and rendered valuable assistance in returning many stranded craft to ser vice. He continued his hazardous task until the boat in which he was embarked was sunk by enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
