The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign George Rexford Woodmore, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as gunfire liaison officer attached to an Infantry Division during the invasion of Italy in 1943. Ensign Woodmore established a fire-control communications unit in an advanced position and maintained continuous contact withy the firing ship. He directed fire with remarkable effectiveness until he was killed by an enemy barrage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
