Southard, Jr. (NSN: 0-173687), United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Torpedo Bomber Pilot embarked in U.S.S. ESSEX during the Battle for Leyte Gulf in October 1944.
