Thomas Road became a World War II Navy ACE, credited with shooting down 5.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. Three days after he shot down his fifth enemy airplane to become an ACE on July 22, 1944, he was lost on a mission over Rendova and reported as Missing in Action.
