Day (NSN: 3931676), United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II.. Chief Torpedoman’s Mate Day displayed outstanding leadership as chief of the boat in a submarine in action against the Japanese throughout three hazardous war patrols. During night surface engagements he maintained efficient and expeditious handling of ammunition. His devotion to duty was an inspiration to his shipmates. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
