The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade James M. Tidball, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of LCI (L) 339 during the initial assault on Lae during World War II. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Tidball maneuvered through withering enemy machine gun fire and shells from shore batteries to successfully beach his sinking vessel and unload troops and cargo. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
