The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant William K. Rummel, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Navy Beachmaster during the assault on Attu Island, Territory of Alaska, during World War II. Lieutenant Rummel efficiently directed unloading of men and supplies despite heavy enemy shelling. His skillful leadership contributed greatly to the success of the operation under extremely unfavorable conditions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
