The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Caydar E. Swenson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States during World War II. On a dark beach, lighted only by intense enemy fire, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Swenson, commanding the leading boat wave of assault troops, effected the landing. By accomplishing this mission, subsequent landings were made expeditiously. He then assumed the duties of beachmaster and maintained a steady flow of supplies, although subjected to numerous bombing and strafing attacks.

Swenson, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during the assault on Salerno, in September 1943. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Swenson conducted his boat group over enemy mine fields and directed the assault waves to assigned beaches, despite sustained enemy attack for more than four hours. His skill and fearlessness contributed materially to the success of the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
