The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Robert E. L. Chandler, United States Navy, for heroic action during World War II. While fighting a gasoline fire aboard a small boat, Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Chandler noticed a badly burned seaman struggling unsuccessfully to keep afloat. He dived into the oil-covered sea, and with the aid of another seaman, succeeded in getting the stunned and helpless victim into a life jacket until help came.
