The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Radioman Third Class Marion E. Stewart, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during the assault and occupation of French Morocco, 8 – 11 November 1942. Attached to the U.S.S. COLE (DD-155) during the landing at Safi, French Morocco, Radioman Third Class Stewart exposed himself constantly to enemy fire while engaged in handling lines on the forecastle, until finally he was wounded in the chest. His fighting spirit and devotion to duty contributed in large measure to the success of a vital mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
