Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 318 (September 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander John F. Greenslade, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Aircraft, South Pacific Force, from 23 September 1942 to 30 May 1943. With superb organizational skill and steadfast devotion to duty, Commander Greenslade effectively coordinated the Allied Army, Navy Marine Groups, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force in offensive operations against the enemy Japanese. Frequently extending his activities into hazardous combat areas, he participated in numerous reconnaissance flights over hostile territory with complete disregard for his own personal safety. His courageous initiative and resolute determination contributed materially to the devastating raids launched by Allied air forces against enemy shipping and shore installations and were vital factors in the far-flung success of our land-based aircraft in the South Pacific.
