The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade William E. Clarke, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight for shooting down two enemy planes while operating with his squadron from an airfield on Guadalcanal Island during the Solomon Islands campaign as pilot of a fighter plane in 1942.
