The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Samuel Day Blythe (NSN: 0-299277), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in operations against the enemy while participating in an aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based fighter aircraft of Fighting Squadron TWENTY (VF-20), embarked in U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6), on a strike against the Japanese Fleet on 24 October 1944, in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire he attacked with rockets and assisted in the destruction of an enemy destroyer. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
