The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Motor Machinist Edgar E. Bias, Jr. (NSN: 7555417), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as the member of the crew of a close-in fire support ship on 17 February 1945, during the assault and capture of Iwo Jima Island. After the ship was severely damaged by enemy fire, he, although painfully wounded, courageously remained at his station of duty in the flooded engine room until the ship was retired to an area of safety. Through his outstanding devotion to duty, he contributed immeasurably to the saving of the ship and the lives of many of his shipmates. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
