DRUM (SS-228), Chief Applegate performed his duties in an outstanding manner which was largely responsible for the high percentage of torpedo hits on enemy vessels, and rendered great assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking 59,417 tons of enemy shipping including a seaplane tender, and in damaging 26,300 tons including an aircraft carrier.
