The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Norman Howard Anthony (NSN: 0-106356), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against enemy forces on 12 October 1944, as Pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane in Bombing Squadron SEVEN (VB-7), in making a glide bombing attack against enemy shipping and harbor installations in the Formosa area. By an alert exercise of combat judgment he selected a strategically important installation as the target and led three planes of his division in an attack which effectively destroyed the major portion of the target. In executing this attack he was obliged to run the gauntlet of repeated enemy fighter attacks and intense anti-aircraft crossfire, as well as surmount the extreme difficulties presented by the adverse weather conditions. His alert leadership and dauntless courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
