The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Douglas George Anstett (NSN: 0-97776), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Executive Officer of a United States Destroyer during operations against the enemy off Okinawa, from 26 March to 3 May 1945. In the face of repeated and determined air attacks, he supervised and coordinated combat activities with exceptional skill and ability, thereby contributing materially to his ship’s successful accomplishment of duty as radar picket and fighter director. Five Japanese planes were shot down and others driven off, while the Combat Air Patrol, controlled by his ship, claimed forty-two planes destroyed, eight probably shot down and four damaged. His courage, outstanding leadership and conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
