The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Machinist Elliott Annis (NSN: 105836), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 4 February 1942. In Charge of the Amidships (Engineering) Repair Party, Machinist Annis directed his men in fighting serious fire, freeing the ship of water, rescuing the wounded and repairing damage. His leadership, force and judgment, coupled with complete disregard for his own safety resulted in bringing under control the effects of the bombing which might have otherwise have been fatal to the ship. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
