    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Walter Charles Andrews, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Tokyo, Iwo Jima, Kyushu and Nansei Shoto. As pilot of a carrier-based fighter plane during the period 10 February 1945 to 5 May 1945, he participated in twenty strikes against enemy shipping, airfields and installations, inflicting extensive damage. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Walter Charles Andrews, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot of a carrier-based fighter aircraft in an action against major units of the Japanese Fleet in the East China Sea on 7 April 1945. Despite adverse weather conditions, and intense anti-aircraft fire, he carried out a determined strafing attack on an enemy cruiser, causing a material slackening of this ship’s anti-aircraft fire, so the successful bombing and torpedo runs could be made. Following the action, the target ship was seen to capsize and sink. His courage and skill in carrying out with perfect timing, his part of the attack were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
